Super fun-tastic SAI tutorial by KaceyMeg Super fun-tastic SAI tutorial by KaceyMeg
THIS FILE IS EXTREMELY LARGE- Download for largest
IT ALSO TOOK ME ALL AFTERNOON so I hope it helps someone!

Before you begin, please keep in mind this is not a drawing tutorial, or how to correctly shade, how to paint.. this is more a "how I use this program"
I have had many question how I use SAI, or be confused about the program. I love SAI and hope that many others can as well.

I am not the best at explaining and couldnt really do a breaking SAI down to basics so I did it in a way that.. I showed my progress while explaining common tools?

When it comes to programs most of it comes from trial and error, and getting used to it. Ive been using SAI for 4 years now so I am very familiar.

Anyway I hope this helps someone out there who is confused/intimidated by SAI =] plus this took me all afternoon so someone better appreciate it haha

Commonly used terms
Clipping group/clipping mask layer: Masks artwork on one layer using an image from another layer. In a clipping group, the bottom most layer(base layer), masks or controls the shape of any successive layers.

Preserve opacity/preserve transparency/lock transparency: Locks the transparency in the layer, allowing you to only paint on the pixels that already exist in the layer and not the transparent pixels.

Layer mode eg Multiply, overlay: The mode in which the layer is set at, these change how the layers look while above other layers
--------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer:
I do not claim to know the "right way" of using SAI, nor is this how you have to use it. This is a guide, take what you like from it. This is merely for learning and sharing my knowledge. I am still learning myself!

ANY QUESTIONS?? please ask! I will do my best to help you
Also apologies for the typos, I'll go back and fix them another day heh

Thank you

I did not even know that Invert trick with selecting inside Lineart. I just tried it and it blew me away.

Nice tutorial.

I do have a question. is majorly confused....so I have three layers:

lineart(top layer)
flats(middle layer)
bgcolor(bottom layer)

the bg layer has solid brick red/brown covering the canvas. flats is currently empty. lineart has a connected lineart. I went to the flats layer and clicked preserve opacity...went to draw in flats and it went outside the line....i didn't want that. thought id used the wrong thing so i switched the lineart to clipping group...but that didn't fix it either. every time I try to color in flats layer it goes outside the lines...what am I doing wrong???

If the flats are empty, it won't work.
From what I am reading, you say there is nothing in the flats layer and then you attempt it. You have to set up the magic wand selection before you can colour. Then when the whole area has a fill of colour, you can preserve the opacity and it should only draw onto the coloured area inside the lines (as long as for fill is all in the lines)

Wow, I am so use to CS5 and I really want to try SAI badly. But I have a few questions with location of things hehe and maybe others :iconicantbelieveitplz:

1) Where is the tool to lock layers, the smudge tool
2) How do you make highlights
3) Do you know how to use the pen tool in SAI?

I think that's it :P

This is really helpful, thank you!

I've a question. I made a lineart, saved it (.sai, .psd and .jpg), I opened it again on Sai [.jpg] but it won't let me use the wand tool properly. I click on something and it selects the whole image ;__; how can I fix this? thank you!

Double check your detection mode plus settings!

I always have mine at colour difference, the higher it is the more selection it makes.

Thankyou so much for this! I'm a photoshop kid and although I've seen people make amazing things with SAI, I've never been able to use it at anywhere near it's full potential. Hopefully this will help me get a little better with it :)

Thank you! You're awesome! I didn't know there was this "stabilizer" thing and I always thought I was too clumsy to make smooth lines A

Oh, this is really helpful! I've been using SAI for quite some time, but I'm horrible of finding new ways to work in myself. XD The Stabilizer and Multiple shading is something I'm gonna go play with, along with colorfing your lineart (which I've always wanted to do but had no idea how).

OH GOODNESS. This tutorial is very helpful; I've never used clipping, etc. and used to color things in that way and erase stuff outside of the lines on each layer. This will save so much time.

I'm thinking of getting SAI, because somehow it seems to me a better painting programme than photoshop.
I'll store your tutorial for later, it may be useful if I make this decision ;-)
